Summary: Ace knew he was male from the time he could form thoughts, but the fight to live the way he wants comes at a heavy cost. When Bev lost his dad, it offered an opportunity to transition that he may not get again. They meet at the Pie Stand one night after a gig, neither are aware of how important their relationship will ultimately become as they fight to establish their place in the world.

Can I claim more than one fic for art?
Yes, but you need to finish your first claim before you can claim the second.

Can more than one artist claim the same fic?
Yes, but only once every fic has already been claimed once.

If I'm already writing a story, can I also create art? Can I do more than one art submission?
Absolutely, as long as you're not claiming your own story. Multiple art submissions cannot be for the same fic and you can only do one at a time. So, if you claimed fic 21 for a mix, you need to finish that mix before you can claim fic 16 for art.

If I've made my own art/soundtrack for my story, can I include it?
Absolutely. Your fic or podfic can be accompanied by as much of your own art in as many styles as you like.

Oh dear, deadlines

I want to apologize very much to everyone for my absence. I neglected to notice the deadline for rough drafts in May and I'm also late in announcing the cut-off for signups. This isn't like me. And what's worse, I'm going to be out of town and away from Internet access for three weeks beginning tomorrow.

Okay, so let's get back on track here. Since I hadn't sent out notice that drafts were due, I'm going to extend that deadline in hopes that we'll get more participation. Rough drafts are due on Saturday, August 23, which is when I'll begin responding to them.

The other deadlines will similarly be extended so that things work out as they were meant to. I don't want things to be less manageable for you guys on account of my mistakes.

If you have questions that I can't address during that period, I'll do whatever I can to find a good solution when I come back. The important part is that this challenge inspires stories, art, and other goodies to get done.

tl;dr: Again, I apologize and I'm ready to get things going with the big bang. The deadline for the rough draft is August 23. Let's get some fiction and other goodies created!

I'd love it if this could turn into more of a social forum where we can share the frustrations and joys of turning a few scattered ideas into an epic work of fiction. So, please post whatever you like about the process of putting together your story.

Welcome to the Queer Big Bang Challenge!

The challenge is for writers to at write least 10,000 words for a novella in whatever fandom, crossover, or original fiction setting you like. Your work has to deal with the experience of being non-heterosexual and/or non-cisgender.

This is a multimedia challenge. We allow a large variety of media, even in the "author" (write 10,000+ words) section of the challenge. If you have a favorite style of work that takes at least as much time and effort as writing a 10,000+ word fic, we're open to it.

After the authors have worked their magic, the artists will then create fanworks of various kinds to go with each story.

Last Minute Question Prior to Round 3

Round 3 sign-ups begin tomorrow, Feb. 8th!

We've had one suggestion that we add another kind of fanwork. I'm guessing the suggestion is to add podfic to the art/vid/mix artist options but not exactly sure. Anyway, the idea sounds great to me.

I have a question I want to put out to everyone here. (I'd like to think I've learned my lesson about making big changes and asking for opinions after the fact!)

The thing that would prevent me from participating in this round is the schedule. I've already promised people a sequel, and I don't want them to wait 'til September to get it. I'd rather just not put it in the challenge. Or...

Would it be okay if we permitted early submissions? If we kept all the deadlines as-is, and allowed people to post early? If an author submitted early, that wouldn't change the standard deadline for their artist, but it would mean that the fic might be posted without its art until the art is done.

ETA: I'll be modding no matter what. I'm really excited to get a chance to run this challenge. The "prevent me from participating" part only refers to whether or not I submit my sequel to the challenge.

I'm putting this in a separate post so people don't have to sift through the comments to see the outcome...

First, lots and lots of thanks go to the person who brought the topic up with me via PM. It's definitely not easy to say, "Hey, I disagree," especially to someone who's got the admin privileges. It's quite clear from the discussion that resulted that a lot of people would have been unhappy with things if this person hadn't spoken up. So, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Second, what this community's about should be what the people in this community think it should be about. What I've seen in the comments is a very clear vote that this community is about being non-heterosexual and/or non-cisgendered. It might be an interesting topic to consider other relationships and identities that society doesn't accept, but it's beyond the premise of this community. Those sorts of things can be the exception, not the rule.

So, I've managed to drag us all around a huge discussion just to end up where we started. Sorry about that! Thanks for bearing with me, and thanks for all the really thoughtful responses!

Someone sent me a really thoughtful message saying they're uncomfortable with the expanded list of ways to be queer, and this person made a lot of good points. I want to bring the discussion to the comm because this really isn't a decision I want to make arbitrarily for everyone.

"Feed the Muse" Suggestion Drive

Round 2's FAQ had a list of example themes for this challenge. Let's come up with an even bigger list. Some of your suggestions will end up in future rounds' FAQs.

Guidelines are, it needs to be something that's general to several different fandoms, not just one particular fandom. But it can be specific to one orientation or expression.

I've been updating the community's profile, so check out the new definition of what is and isn't queer. (Hint: the list of what's included is quite a bit longer.)

Edit: the community's definition of 'queer' is currently up for discussion in a different post, so keep that in mind with this thread.

New Round Begins February 8th

Since all of the stories have been claimed once, and I haven't heard from any new authors, in the last couple weeks, I'm going to go ahead and close Claims.

Emails will go out shortly. Because I left claims open so long, I'm going to go ahead and wave, Final Drafts.

Posting Dates will be from September 30th through October 8th. With an Amnesty week between October 9 and 16.

[I've had some family emergencies pop up, so if you don't hear from me again, before the date's to post start, please just go ahead and start posting. You all should have posting access]

Alright everybody, I am going to be leaving the main submissions open for one more day. Until tomorrow morning (Aug 3)

We've gotten 4 great stories submitted with 2 more on their way, but I'd love to have a few more stories for our lovely artists to work with, so please don't be shy about asking for an extension. As long as I know your story is coming I can give you a few extra days to work on it.

Because we have around 2 artist to every submitted story so far, I'm going to go ahead and combine the two artist claims dates.
All artists can now make a claim on August 10th.

Rough Drafts: Due AUG. 1st

Alright everybody. Don't freak out, but Rough Drafts are due on August 1st. Just insert your information into the form linked below whenever you are ready to submit.

OKAY FOLKS, My first form didn't work quite right, so I've replaced the link with one to the new form. If you submitted using the first form, I do have your rough drafts and you do not have to re-submit.
